After sticking up for Matt Lauer in light of recent sexual misconduct allegations against him, Geraldo Rivera has been getting a lot of backlash. Things aren’t looking so good for the talk show host. Rivera released a series of tweets in which he stated, “News is a flirty business.” He is walking a very thin line, and he may have just stepped right over it.

Rivera’s statements earned him a slew of Twitter attacks. People began to question Rivera’s own integrity. Then, some Twitter users posted a photo that Rivera had posted himself years back. Other users brought up the issue of what Rivera may have done to Bette Midler years ago. A video was uncovered of an interview from 1991 with Barbara Walters in which Walters asks Midler about Rivera’s claims in his autobiography that he and Midler had a sexual relationship.

Biz Pac Review reported that Midler initially laughed off the claim from Rivera’s autobiography and said that Rivera’s “penis went to his head.” She went on to say “One thing I did remember is how I met Geraldo and that was not funny.”

She paused before continuing on with her story. She was pressed by Walters to spill some more information, so Midler went on to say “Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me in the ’70s, the early ’70s. And this was when he was very sort of hot. And he and his producer left the crew in the other room. They pushed me into my bathroom. They broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose and proceeded to grope me.” She continued, “I did not offer myself up on the altar of Geraldo Rivera. He was unseemly. His behavior was unseemly.”

It was clear that Walters was uncomfortable and began trying to change the direction of the interview. Midler decided to finish her thought, however. She stated, “I’ll tell you the truth, if I had known 20 years later he was gonna wind up as a slimy talk show host I never would have even let him in the room, you know?”

Similarly to the interview with actor Corey Feldman regarding pedophilia in Hollywood, Walters made a beeline to drop the subject from the “unseemly” actions of Rivera. In his book, Geraldo describes the incident in a different way.

EW wrote:

Rivera has not yet commented on the video but did address the encounter in his 1991 memoir, Exposing Myself. “We were in the bathroom, preparing for the interview, and at some point I put my hands on her breasts,” he wrote, according to a 1991 review published by the Washington Post

Bette Midler has just released a new statement on the happening explaining that Geraldo Rivera never has apologized to her. She used the popular hashtag of #MeToo, which is meant to bring awareness to sexual assault.

Fox News released a statement on Rivera’s tweets explaining, “Geraldo’s tweets to not reflect the views of FOX News or its management. We were troubled by his comments and are addressing them with him.”

Rivera has backed off from his original tweets and has now issued an apology. He stated that he didn’t “sufficiently explain” all of the details about issues of sexual harassment in his tweet.
